Ultimately, though, I found this version of The Librarian of Auschwitz to be simplistic and a little stiff. I appreciate what the authors tried to do and it is possible that the story line lost something in translation. The true story of Dita Kraus, a young Jewish woman who survived Auschwitz, was fictionalized in Antonio Iturbe’s Spanish-language novel, translated into English in 2017.

I'm not sure I agree with the idea of presenting any of the Holocaust as being even mildly palatable. Incidentally, at the end of the book, the author describes his meeting with Dita Kraus and how they went to Terezin together.

La lectura te mantiene en vilo en todo momento y, a pesar de que Dita es prácticamente una niña, su relato no es infantil. Not only did she do this, I found myself writing so many passages down purely because they were so beautifully written and translated. The family camp was a cover the Germans concocted to deceive the world as to what was really happening in Auschwitz. Dita's circumstances broke my heart just as I knew they would, but I was amazed by how much hope she and some of the other characters held in their hearts.

Especially since the Eucharist wine symbolizes Christ’s blood, and consuming any blood is a violation of Jewish laws. habrá quien piense que es un acto de valentía inútil en un campo de exterminio, cuando hay otras preocupaciones mas perentorias; los libros no curan las enfermedades ni pueden utilizarse como armas para doblegar a un ejercito de verdugos, no llenan el estomago ni quitan la sed. This is an especially important day to my family, like many other Jewish families around the world, since my father was a Holocaust survivor from Poland.
