As ever, this post is not a full blown review. I'm not a photographer who produces technically perfect work; I'm a photographer that shoots candidly and I see "the moment" as far more important than "the technically perfect pictures".

Distortion likewise is corrected before we become involved, and hence measures a very low -0.16% barrelling, as near perfect as makes little difference. When the Fujifilm XF 23mm F/2 is attached to any Fujifilm X Series body, it feels like a perfect match. This size and weight balance well, since most Fujifilm X Series camera bodies are more compact than a lot of brands, even in the mirrorless market. The 23mm f2, much like the other lenses in the series, is built to be weather and dust-resistant. So it can withstand being in light rain or strong winds. It can also shoot in temperatures of up to -10°C, making it the perfect accessory on any winter trip. Although not generally a problem for most shots, flare can happen from time to time. If you use the supplied the lens hood, it’s kept to a minimum, but in some situations it’s unavoidable - whether this is a problem is likely to be down to the individual, some like the effects lens flare creates. Either way, it’s a pretty rare occurrence which generally only happens when pointing the lens directly towards a very bright light source. Above left: XF 23mm f2 at f2. Above right: XF 23mm f1.4 at f1.4. At closest focusing distance of each lens.

Overall, the differences in performance between the f2 and the f1.4 are tiny. The price difference is larger, however. As is the weight. Those that know my wedding photography and social documentary photography will know that almost always use a full frame equivalent combination of 35mm and 85mm. The features are the first thing many look at when choosing a new camera lens. This lets you know what you’re working with and provides an excellent base for comparing against other lenses. The Super EBC coating has been applied to different parts of the lens. This will help reduce the amount of light that reflects off the lens and causes problems with contrast and colour, which will help improve your pictures when you are taking them in areas with a lot of light. At the base of the lens is a red dot just below the focal length marking (23mm). You can use this red dot to line up the lens to the mount on whichever camera you’re using.

The 23mm, f2 X-series lens does have a free-spinning manual focus ring. This ring has no real hard stops, so you can’t really tell which stop you’re on. Fuji 23mm f2 Sharpness While walking around the streets I forget everything around me. I like this feeling a lot. When I get a good shot, I am very happy, and the whole day was worth the travel and walking.

The supplied lens hood is made of plastic, but it is very small and discreet, and doesn’t detract particularly from the overall look of the lens. Although you can remove the lens hood, it’s not possible to reverse it and attach it to the lens for storage - but the hood is so small that you will probably just leave it on at all times. The Fujifilm XF 23mm f/2.0 is a lens I use for hiking, travel, and everyday shooting. This means it spends most of its life susceptible to weather, dusty hiking trails, busy city streets, and a fast moving toddler. The weather resistance on the XF 23mm f/2 has proven to be very effective when paired with my weather resistant Fuji XT-3. I’ve used this lens in rain, snow, and the dusty deserts of Southern California without issue. It’s also worth mentioning Fujifilm’s X100 series which feature built-in 23mm f2 lenses. While the focal length and focal ratio match the XF 23mm f2 though, don’t assume they’re the same optical design – the X100’s all-in-one design allows some of the optical elements to be housed within the body and closer to the sensor. Indeed it also implements a simpler optical construction with eight elements in six groups with one aspherical element. That said, while the optical construction is different, I noticed the X100 lens sharing some characteristics with the XF 23mm f2, which I’ll mention later. This delightfully compact lens weighs in at a modest 180g. It looks as though it could be at home on any classic rangefinder camera body, and it is easy to see how this style of optic and the Fujifilm X-Pro2 could appeal to those who have previously used Leica or Voigtlander cameras. Could this be a perfect combination for the purist street photographer? Set your aperture at f8 and focus at 12 feet and the blue depth of field scale at the bottom of the viewfinder shows approxiamtely 6 feet to infinity as being in focus. Just the way it should be. FINALLY! Of course, the depth of field was still in the shot even though the in-camera scale was incorrect but it’s nice to know you can use this scale when setting up your shots moving forward.

Bokeh and subject separation aren’t lens qualities that rank high for me on a 35mm focal length lens, but I know I’m in the minority on that. When cross shopping the XF 23mm f/2 against the older 23mm f/1.4, I realized how many people were using the f/1.4 version for portraits, food photography, and other applications that showcase the f/1.4’s pleasant bokeh. For this reason, I thought it would be worth posting a few photos from the XF 23mm f/2 for those of you that are interested. I thought the max aperture of f/1.4 on the older XF 23mm would provide a much shallower DOF than the max of f/2 version, but the differences aren’t really that great. There 23mm f/2 really holds its own here.
