Description

It is as if he has fallen out of his body and Susan Varley's descriptions are so touching one almost cries. The book uses euphemisms and direct language to refer to the badger dying, and gives some attention to Badger's preparations for death before focusing primarily on the community's rituals for healing. Endorsed by Child Bereavement UK and with reading notes and online resources in the back of the book. I want to be better about teaching joyful things to my children, things they will carry in their memories down the decades to come.

The story doesn’t just focus on the feelings that surround the touching subject of death but it additionally focuses on how the characters deal with the bereavement. However the dated appearance of the book seems to award it weight and authority on the issues it confronts so tenderly. Susan Varley’s writing is so beautiful that you wouldn’t mind that the text on each page is longer than most picture books. After Badgers death, his friends come to realise how their lives were enriched by his friendship and over time memories of him will only be good ones without the feeling of sadness.Facebook sets this cookie to show relevant advertisements to users by tracking user behaviour across the web, on sites that have Facebook pixel or Facebook social plugin. One of the closing paragraphs says that "whenever Badger's name was mentioned, someone remembered another story that made them all smile. They don't know how to handle their grief, but as the days go by, they each begin to remember special things Badger taught them to do, and they take comfort in those abilities and exchange stories of happy days with Badger. The following day his friends gather and wonder what they should do as they try to console themselves with the fact that Badger had told them not to be unhappy.

I further feel that it’s a brilliant book to read to young children as it continually encourages them to think about the happy and positive aspects behind dealing with death. The story shows the importance of talking about these situations and it may help children to share their feelings with others. He carries on running with no difficulty and when he falls head over paws there is no pain and he feels free. Within the context of Religious Education being taught to younger children I think Badgers Parting Gifts is a good book to explore with them and to use as a stimulus. This is a gentle and tender book—one that could start or continue a conversation about grief and loss with a child.First published in 1984, Badger’s Parting Gifts tells the story of a dying badger and his wonderful friends that he would leave behind. Once the story has been read to a group of children this would then enable the themes to be explored as a vehicle for questioning, communication and discussion. Heartbroken, his friends started to remember all of the things that Badger had taught each of them leaving each with a parting gift. He tries to prepare his friends for this event, but when he does die, they are still grief-stricken.

Simply, I wanted to thank you for all the ways that Badger and his friends Mole, Frog, Fox and Rabbit have touched my heart and my life. As Badger's friends remember all the things he taught them, I was reminded of everything my dad taught me. This is a poignant and touching story about a Badger who is very old and has accepted that he will soon die. It is a sad beginning in that Badger, a dependable, reliable type, always ready to lend a helping paw, is very old and he knows that he will soon die.
