This, the man said, was the reason why Billy volunteered for the most dangerous jobs, took incredible risks, and fought as hard as he could to destroy the enemy; he wasn’t interested in the rights or wrongs of war, or in being brave, he just wanted it to be over.

The finale as Mother Nature plays her cruel trick on the defending Romans is superbly executed by Breem as the tension mounts and the fury of the starving barbarians is unleashed.

It's also about a young man hoe is a soldier in the trenches of world war 1 who, on the spur of the moment , had done what he thought was the right thing. I have re-read this book several times because of its brilliant reconstruction of some of the definitive events, which brought to an end the western Roman empire.

This book is historical fiction, but there is information at the end of the book about the real people in the story and who the story was loosely based on. This is one of those books that can be read on so many levels that any reader (whether middle school child, teen or adult) would get something from reading it. If you are interested in the "real story" and "hard history", or rather as much of it as we try to piece together, then you may want to read Ian Hughes' excellent biography of the much maligned Stilicho. Read how Billy Byron met different people and went to different places and how he will always remain.

This story explores his time in the armed forces, the many battles he had fought, his dreams, his hopes for the future of the world, and his regrets for the actions he had taken in the past. Afland, dupa 20 ani, ca fapta sa din tinerete poate influenta vietile intregii lumi, Billy decide sa incerce sa indrepte greseala din trecut, cu riscul propriei vieti. Most purchases from business sellers are protected by the Consumer Contract Regulations 2013 which give you the right to cancel the purchase within 14 days after the day you receive the item. At first, things go reasonably well, with Maximus shoring up the defences and managing to secure provisions despite the lack of support from civilian authorities and the civilian populations that they are protecting.

Wallace Wilfred Swinburne Breem was a British librarian and author, the Librarian and Keeper of Manuscripts of the Inner Temple Law Library at his death, but perhaps more widely known for his historical novels, including the classic Eagle in the Snow (1970). it was about a man on a train who had won many awards telling some stories to a boy with a brokennarm and his mum. Escaping from the bombing that has destroyed their home in Coventry they are on their way to Cornwall to stay with an Aunt there.A former Children's Laureate, Michael is also the co-founder, with his wife Clare, of the charity Farms for City Children. There’s a gentle, satisfying twist at the end of this thought provoking book, when the man has finished telling them Billy’s story, and the train begins to move again. One hint here, however, we know that auto-mutilation by civilians to avoid military service (cutting of the right-hand thumb, which made it impossible to propoerly hold a lance or a javelin) did happen, especially in the Western part of the Empire. It's loosely based on the life of Henry Tandey, a British soldier who may or may not have spared Hitler's life near the end of World War I.

My favourite characters are Barney because he is an inquisitive and listening boy and the sounds really nice. Based on a true story, it is set at the time of the Coventry blitz during the Second World War, but the real focus takes place in the First World War, when an act of mercy turns out to have unforeseen and disastrous consequences. Please feel free to leave suggestions for new books to review, as well as comments on the individual reviews themselves. I didn’t know anything about Henry Tandey before reading this book, and now I’m excited to learn as much as I can about him!

This short but immersive novel has some classic illustrations from Michael Foreman, which could help get this book into the hands of some reluctant readers. At its heart this is the tale of one man's bid to hold the line against the advancing Barbarian Hordes, to Preserve the Light, Lest Darkness Fall (okay sorry abouit the capital letters, but it is that kind of big heroic sweeping kind of a tale). His novel War Horse has been successfully adapted as a West End and Broadway theatre play and a major film by Steven Spielberg. I have just finished "An Eagle in the Snow "and was really impressed with the story as I like stories based on truth.
