Description

It is filled with beautiful messages and hope that the next generation will do much better than the one that came before it. Their relationship is heartwarming, and Sofia (whose perspective we experience the story from) is relatable and authentic. A moon-white skull still warm from last night’s fire was cupped over her feet, for here the nights were clear and cool.

This one follows siblings Sofia and Ermin in a historical Siena, where the Smallpox has taken the lives of so many in their town. It sounds magical and full of respect when given you have bones as the source it would easily fall under garish. She is also an ossuarist (someone who makes things with bone), and her particular brand of this bone craft involves invoking something of the spirit of the person whose bone she crafts, so it can bring comfort to those left behind. Yet, after a visit from a mysterious woman dressed in silver with an armoured magpie, Sofia’s mother seems tense and worried.

If you think pet crows, bone houses, underground tunnels, scary orphanages, clever children, brave girls and beautiful writing sound like a good time (and honestly, how could they not? For such a fascinating place, filled with magpies that seem to be controlled by soldiers, I wanted to know more about why these birds were here and how they were controlled. Older villains are a common theme in books where children are the protagonists, but Hargrave does an especially good job of using this to portray the virtue of children's innocence and the corrupting effect of power in adults. The convent orphanage is exactly as awful as it sounds; Sister Rosa seems sickeningly sweet, but the children are scared, and they keep disappearing in the night -a mystery that kept me guessing for most of the book.

A darkly beautiful historical novel featuring Kiran’s trademark magical realism and an enthralling mystery, and the fourth children’s novel by Times number one bestselling author Kiran Millwood Hargrave, winner of the Waterstones Children’s Book Prize. Kiran Millwood Hargave zabiera nas na przygodę przez historyczną Sienę wraz z rodzeństwem Sofią i Erminen, którzy po tym jak uprowadzono ich matkę, postanawiają ją od odnaleźć. Sofia and her little brother Ermin are sent to the convent orphanage but soon escape, led by an enigmatic new friend and their pet crow, Corvith. Sofia, dziewczyna z kościanego domu" to już kolejna książka Kiran Millwood Hargrave wydana w Polsce i tym razem również autorce udało się mnie totalnie oczarować. I wish I could see what happened next and spend a bit more time with these characters and this world, but alas, this was a perfect standalone.Poważniejsze tematy są tutaj przedstawione w sposób bardzo przystępny, a po samą książkę mogą sięgać także starsi czytelnicy.

Nie czytając blurba byłam zaskoczona już w 1/3 treści, później zadawałam sobie pytanie jak to wszystko może się skończyć. I can always get lost in Kiran’s books and forget the world around me, something that was very needed at the time I read this book. The worldbuilding and characters are vivid, and I never struggle to feel like I’m walking alongside the characters. Od tego momentu zaczynają się przygody, o jakich nawet nie śnili w najczarniejszych snach, że mogą mieć miejsce.love puzzles, secret passageways, pet crows and the very worst of villains, then do pick this one up. Between them, her children's books have won numerous awards including Children's Book of the Year at the British Book Awards, the Waterstones Children's Book Prize, the Historical Association Young Quills Award, and the Blackwell's Children's Book of the Year. All about her were skeletons: by the thin shafts of light flitting in from the slits in the ribcage shutters she could see the bed about her, built from tibias and fibulas. Their mother is a talented bone-builder and rumoured healer, so when she is arrested, Sofia and Ermin get taken to an orphanage, thus beginning their adventures in reuniting with their mother.

I loved their sibling relationship; they are very different people but they work well together and they complement each other well. She has crafted the entire house they live in (side note, I will also take one of these houses, thank you), and is working on a series of boxes for the Duchessa, and she is due to deliver the last of these on Sofia’s birthday.Autorka przy pomocy kościanego kluczyka otwiera przed nami wrota zawiłości fabuły, otoczonej tajemnicą i przepełnionej klimatem baśni jakie znamy z dzieciństwa. I only wish this was longer so we had more development of the story and got to understand the motivations of some of the characters better. Her first book for adults, The Mercies, debuted as The Times number 1 bestseller, and at number 5 in the Sunday Times Bestseller Charts.
