And if my bad history with the unsealed, non-weatherproofed Canon EF-S 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Lens is any indication (I’ve gone through at least 4 or 5 of these over a span of 10 years), the Sony lens is a big upgrade as far as durability is concerned. Final Thoughts / Conclusion These are different lenses; get the 24-240 if you don't want to carry a separate tele, and get this 24-105mm if you want a higher-quality lens to cover only to 105mm.

In this scheme, the second camera (which is my old Canon EOS 60D mated with a dedicated L-series telephoto lens) handles my wildlife or other distant-subject photography needs. This Sony 24-105 4 is the most practical high-quality zoom you can get for your Sony. Everything works great and all my pictures are super-sharp and well exposed. It will not work on any Sony A-mount DSLR or any Minolta MAXXUM 35mm SLR of any kind. Those use the old A mount which was actually the Minolta MAXXUM mount from 1987. At 105mm, the lens' longest focal length, performance continues to impress. If you don't require an F2.8 max aperture, the greater zooming capabilities of the FE 24-105mm F4 are a big reason why a photographer may opt for it over Sony's fantastic 24-70mm F2.8 GM and GM II pro zooms. Of course, price is also a factor, but I think the extra 35mm at the long end is very nice. I love this lens. it's the best midrange zoom available for full-frame Sony cameras if you live in the real world where you have to carry your own gear all day. This 24-105mm is a pro-level lens at a consumer price! Someone at Sony is starting to take the photography market seriously, bravo!Finally, if I wanted to attach a filter (like a circular polarizer) to the lens, it accepts those with 77mm in diameter.

This was something that I couldn’t do with the Sony SEL24240 lens, which had the same wide angle zoom range, but even longer telephoto reach. Don't mistake "plain" for bad, though, because the lens feels great. It doesn't show fingerprints, it's easy to hold, and the rings feel good in use. The zoom ring includes markings at 24, 35, 50, 70 and 105mm, and it requires less than 90 degrees of rotation to go from 24mm to 105mm. There's not much resistance with the zoom ring, but it's enough that there's no zoom creep. For reasons that I’ll get into later in the article, this Sony lens does have limitations with its zoom range since it doesn’t skimp on image quality.

While our Sony Alpha 7 III body also has an In-Body Image Stabilizer (or IBIS), it actually works in conjunction with that of the lens’ OSS feature. The new FE 24-105mm F4 G OSS lens weighs in at approximately 663 grams (23.4 oz), making it the lightest lens in its class 1. When combined with one of Sony's compact E-mount bodies, it gives photographers and videographers a far more mobile, manageable camera system that greatly increases their shooting flexibility. Therefore, the Sony SEL24105G lens has been my go to lens as it’s pretty much almost always attached to my Sony Alpha 7 III full-frame mirrorless camera body. At 70mm, the lens continues to perform well. At F4, center sharpness is good. Extreme corner sharpness is only okay. I think the corner performance is worse at 70mm than at 50mm, at least at F4.

Vignette is well-controlled by the Sony FE 24-105mm F4 G OSS lens. Even when shooting wide open, there's no big issue throughout the entire zoom range. What minor vignette is present is gone by stopping down to F5.6. The lens by itself weighs 1 pound and 10.9 ounces with the lens hood attached, and together with the Sony Alpha 7 III body, it weighs 3 pounds 6 ounces.
