If you are willing to read just one self-help book - this is the one. Especially if you prefer advice on how to find out what you like and why you are better off behaving in a certain way, to 'just so' statements about beliefs you must adopt and the way you should think-feel-behave to achieve a specific goal / way of life some guru says is best. Your values are always with you, always available. And being faithful to them is usually deeply rewarding. So the more you embrace your values, the greater your sense of fulfillment.

The author (Dr. Harris) seems to assume that all his readers have the same thought processes, make the same mistakes, and can be fixed the same way. After our first session, I got instant results. Over the weekend that followed I had many changes to indulge my addiction and I had the desire, but I was able to use ACT to make values-based choices. At that point, my knowledge of the principles of ACT was rudimentary. On a hike, the days pass the wind, the sun, the stars; movement is powered by a belly full of food and water, not a noxious of fossil fuels. On a hike, you’re less a job title and more a human being… A periodic hike not only stretches the limbs but also reminds us: Wow, there’s a big old world out there.”– Ken Ilgunas I've been thinking a lot about these things for both the big and little challenges that I face each day, and I have found them useful. This isn't a book that tells you how to be happy all the time, because that is not possible. But it does help you live a life of fulfillment, which I think is what matters most. I also believe that a fulfilling life is a joyful life--note that I do not say a "happy" or "ever-pleasant" life, as I think there is an important distinction. Through numerous anecdotes and factual data, he has portrayed how life has become unhappiness even after getting all the comfortable items and with development. Then which factor hinders us to make that happiness count in our life. This is what you will witness in this book.

I take issue with two things in relation to this book. First, there were a few times as I was reading that the tone felt condescending. I felt very little empathy or understanding in relation to how difficult it can be to endure the kinds of things that go beyond the basic, universal aches and pains of life. I found this particularly weird given that the author is a therapist himself…

Races or no races

I also agree that the majority of the suggested techniques associated with ACT are beneficial for many people. There’s a lot of really easy-to-try (sometimes oversimplified) techniques that make sitting with unpleasant emotion a little easier and more accessible to folks who have spent a lot of time and energy trying to control emotion rather than accept it. All Finnish people and everyone just visiting our country have the right to roam anywhere in nature regardless of land ownership. But ‘Everyman’s Right’ means also great responsibility of respecting nature, other people and property. It is important for any trail runner, hiker or other outdoor enthusiast to respect our nature, and to protect and preserve the unique treasures of nature also for future generations.

Thanking your mind with warmth and humor and with a genuine appreciation for the amazing storytelling ability of your mind What is ACT? The acronym also stands for the process Accept your internal experience; Choose a values-based direction; Take action! It has proven effective with depression and addiction. This book is very interactive as well with many diagrams and drawings that makes the reading experience better. The main reasons for heading to the trails (at least for me as a trail runner!) are experiencing nature, health and happiness. Trail running can also be about challenging yourself, for example in races. There’s a small active group of more or less goal-oriented trail runners who participate in races in Finland. The number of races throughout the year is growing fast, and the competitions are often sold out in just hours or minutes. The trails go through the most beautiful sceneries in the country, from wilderness to more urban areas, and vary from short to ultradistances. Trail running events would be great for connecting with the community, but so far, I’ve been happy running just by myself and my own trails, and it has still been a journey that has truly challenged myself both physically and mentally. So, races or no races, great time awaits on trails! Turn the struggle switch to off--stop struggling against physical or emotional pain. Sure it's unpleasant and we don't like it, but it's nothing terrible.... Without struggle, what we get is a natural level of physical and emotional discomfort, depending on who we are and the situation we're in (= "clean discomfort"). There is no avoiding it. But if we struggle with it, it becomes "dirty discomfort", the emotions are amplified when the struggle switch is on. Given the amazing unspoiled pure nature with the geological and seasonal variance and the freedom to roam, I think Finland is truly a trail runner’s paradise. I have explored only a microscopic fracture of all the available trails even in my homeland. How exciting to know that I’m not running out of trails any time soon! Connection: Staying fully aware of the present moment and letting yourself experience the present moment with openness, interest, and receptiveness
