But Mr Majeika's magic saves the day, Class Three and the circus end up on the news and once again Mr Potter, the headmaster, misses it all! Read all Mr Majeika is a wizard, sent to "Britland" from the planet Walpurgis because he failed his O-level sorcery exam for the seventeenth time.

I can see why it appeals to children - the magical teacher, the naughty boy in the class getting turned into a frog etc. He drops into the sleepy village of Much Barty, finding a post at St Barty's School as Class Three's new form-teacher, where he quickly befriends two of the children: Melanie Brace-Girdle and Thomas Grey. School without magic seems rather boring and Mr Majeika doesn't last long in the other jobs he tries.A vast and wonderfully entertaining set of 14 children's adventures, this Mr Majeika Collection is perfect for kids who are starting to get to grips with reading alone. When confronted with a badly behaved Hamish Bigmore, Mr Majeika finds that he unintentionally ends up casting spells he thought he had long forgotten, such as changing Hamish into a frog or giving him vampire teeth. Majeika is an irrepressible wizard sent to "Britland" from the planet Walpurgis because he failed his O-level sorcery exam for the seventeenth time. This is particularly because of its ‘superhero’ feel like nature and magical element that children feel that they can relate to and would definitely recommend it. Not as cool and trendy as other shows of its time, it would have been a huge hit just a few years earlier.

This was a very light-hearted book to read, I would recommend this for KS1 as the story line, although nicely written is very simple in content.Throughout the 15 books in the series, Mr Majeika goes on weird and wonderful adventures with the children from St Barty’s. Mr Majeika can behave just like any ordinary teacher if he wants to, but something has to be done about Hamish Bigmore, the class nuisance, and so he uses a little magic to turn him into a frog. More amazing adventures with Mr Majeika, the ex-wizard, turned teacher, and his class at St Barty's School. The pupils in Class 3 at St Barty's School are not impressed when their headteacher imposes strict rules of behaviour for Halloween. Mr Majeika is about a wizard who applied to be a teacher, he flew into the classroom on a magic carpet. Both of these characters are also in the books, but Melanie is a much less important and very different type of character in the books, and is replaced by another character as female lead, Jody.

Read this to my son as I remembered it from childhood, though have a feeling I may be thinking of the TV show. I think children would enjoy listening to this story and could be used as an introduction to imaginative story writing. When they find a message from him saying he's been arrested by the Silly Crime Squad, they are determined to rescue him. I rather enjoyed how the magician would lose his temper with poor behaviour (Hamish Bigmore often falls victim) and cast various spells on pupils then apologise profusely but never know how to reverse the damage. All the same, trickery becomes more and more necessary, leading Majeika, Melanie and Thomas into some remarkable adventures.
